Air France

Flying with Air France

Following the growing success of air travel in the early 1900s, France unified its five leading carriers under one company name, Air France, in 1933. Within just a few years, Air France became one of the world's major international airline companies. Briefly interrupted by the occupation of the country during the Second World War, Air France emerged in 1946 even stronger and more successful than before and has been growing steadily ever since. In 1922, French airline companies transported approximately 9,500 passengers. In 2012, Air France carried 77.4 million passengers and 1.4 million tons of cargo around the world. Headquartered at Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport, the airline flies internationally under the Air France brand as well as under various subsidiary and partner airlines. Travel between Charles de Gaulle airport and major French tourist destinations is simple with Air France's recent connection with the TGV (high-speed train) network. In 2004 the airline merged with the Dutch-based KLM airline, following an earlier alliance in 2000 with Delta Airlines, Aeromexico and Korean Air. Today, this SkyTeam includes 19 airline companies and holds first place in worldwide revenues due to its incredible level of service. Within metropolitan France, the airline serves 25 airports. Internationally, the airline flies to most major world cities, including several direct flights between France and the continental United States. Many of these long-haul flights are operated 7 days per week. The fleet consists of 350 aircraft, with 8 of those being the famous A380 Airbus which seats 516 passengers and houses an in-flight art gallery. As standard with most other Air France flights, passengers also can enjoy in-flight entertainment systems and quality dining experiences.

Online Check-In

Air France offers three options for flight check-in:

  • Online: Passengers may check in from 30 hours (24 hours on some routes) before their flight departs. Passengers may print their own boarding pass, or save it and email it to print later. Lost or forgotten boarding passes can be printed at the airport at a check-in kiosk.
  • Automatic Check-in: Available on select routes, automatic check-in is provided to passengers who book directly on Air France's website. Passengers will receive their boarding pass automatically via email 30 hours before departure. This boarding pass can be printed at home or at the airport.
  • At the Airport: Passengers may use airport kiosks to check in and print their boarding pass. Booking reference and/or a form of identification, such as a credit/debit card or passport, is required for airport check-in. If passengers require additional help, they may check in at the counter instead. Check-in cut-off times vary by route and passengers are advised to review these cut-off times on the Air France website.

Borading information

Boarding times depend on the flight route and passengers are advised to confirm this time upon arrival at the airport to avoid being denied access to the flight after the gate has closed. Boarding time will be listed on the passenger's printed or electronic boarding pass. Air France passengers are advised that increased security measures can increase the time it takes to screen hand baggage and should therefore allow plenty of time to travel through the airport. This information is particularly relevant on long-haul international flights and at busy international airports. Upon boarding, passengers will be required to show photograph identification. For some international flights, passengers will be required to show a valid passport and visa upon boarding the aircraft. Passengers are asked to place heavier hand baggage underneath the seat in front of them and to store lighter items in the overhead bins upon boarding the aircraft.

Frequent Flyer Information - Flying Blue

Air France's frequent flyer club is called the Flying Blue program and offers many rewards for passengers. Registration is free and the benefits are plentiful regardless of whether passengers travel a little or a lot. With Flying Blue, passengers earn Miles that can be used to purchase Award tickets or special flight services. Miles can be earned by flying with Air France and through purchasing hotel stays, rental cars or other services through the vast network of Flying Blue partners. Loyalty to the Air France brand is rewarded with exclusive benefits through a four-tier system: Ivory, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Passengers in this frequent flyer program are eligible in many cases for benefits such as increased baggage allowance and price reductions on partners' services. Flying Blue Silver, Gold and Platinum card holders are permitted access to many Air France and partner lounges around the globe, where they can enjoy a meal and relax before a flight or between connections.

Hand Baggage Allowance

Hand baggage allowance depends on class of travel and route:

  • Economy and Premium Economy Classes on most flights: 1 standard baggage item 21.5" x 13.5" x 9.5" (55 x 35 x 25cm) including pockets, wheels and handles and 1 accessory (handbag, notebook computer, camera etc.). Maximum total weight of standard baggage and accessory together is 26 lbs (11 kilos).
  • Premium Economy Class on Intercontinental, Caribbean and Indian Ocean flights, and Business and First Class: 2 standard baggage items and 1 accessory with maximum combined weight of 39 lbs (17 kilos).

For all flights, passengers traveling with children under 2 years of age may carry 1 additional small baggage in the cabin. This baggage must be under 26 lbs (11 kilos) and measure less than 21.5" x 13.5" x 9.5" (55 x 25 x 35cm). A fully collapsible stroller is also usually permitted in the cabin of the aircraft. However, larger strollers or non-collapsible strollers may be required to be flown as checked baggage.

Checked Baggage Allowance

Checked baggage allowance depends on class of travel. Air France also offers a Mini Price flight ticketing option in which passengers receive a reduced ticket price in exchange for travel with only hand baggage.

  • Economy: 1 baggage item weighing 50 lbs (22 kilos) or less
  • Premium Economy: 2 baggage items weighing 50 lbs (22 kilos) or less each
  • Business: 2 baggage items weighing 70 lbs (31 kilos) or less each
  • La Première/First: 3 baggage items weighing 70 lbs (31 kilos) or less each

Transportation of sporting equipment, animals, musical instruments and other oversized or specialized baggage items is regulated by route and travel class. Passengers must inquire directly with the airline for more information about the options, restrictions and applicable fees related to these items.
