It’s no secret that many of us are addicted to smartphones. Whether we rely on them to communicate, stay informed or be in constant contact with our friends, we can’t deny that these devices have somehow become an extension of ourselves. But how strong is this dependency? Are we prepared to disconnect occasionally, even if it’s just for a short while? And what happens when we go on holiday, does the smartphone come along?

We have addressed all of these questions and more in our latest study “ON/OFF: Holiday travel with smartphones”, and we would like to communicate our results with you!

Some interesting finds:

Mobile Study

More than 9 out of 10 Europeans don’t disconnect on holiday. This reconfirms our suspicion that many of us carry our mobile phones everywhere, even to the end of the world! And when it comes to frequency of use, over 57% of European travelers admit that they tend to check their phones several times a day.

Not only is it shocking that we find it difficult to disconnect when we take time off to relax, but many of us (76%) can’t seem to live without Wi-Fi and this often influences our choice of hotel.

The most popular smartphone apps

Photos are part of the holiday experience and people want to share them on social networks. Facebook remains the most popular Social Media App across Europe, with 76% of travellers preferring it to other alternatives. Instagram is the second most popular app among European travellers.

Mobile Study

In order to stay in contact with family and friends, most travelers prefer to use Whatsapp (58%), and when it comes to utility apps, Google Maps remains the most useful and reliable option for travelers by a long shot!
